Portugal gets the race back!

Formula 1 has confirmed that the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve, commonly known as Portimão, will return to the racing calendar for 2027 and 2028. The announcement marks an exciting homecoming for Portuguese motorsport fans who last witnessed F1 action at the circuit during the pandemic-affected 2020 and 2021 seasons.

The two-year agreement was reached between Formula 1, the Portuguese government, Turismo de Portugal, and circuit promoter Parkalgar. Portimão will effectively take the slot left vacant by Zandvoort, as the Netherlands’ popular race concludes its run after the 2026 season.

Nestled in Portugal’s picturesque Algarve region, the 4.6-kilometer circuit has earned widespread acclaim for its technical challenges and dramatic elevation changes. F1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali expressed enthusiasm about the return, noting that the circuit delivers excitement from the first corner to the chequered flag.

Portugal boasts a rich motorsport heritage spanning Formula 1’s 75-year history. The nation first hosted a Grand Prix in Porto in 1958, with subsequent races held at the legendary Estoril circuit near Lisbon from 1984 to 1996. Icons including Stirling Moss, Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna and Nigel Mansell have all stood atop Portuguese podiums, with Senna memorably claiming his maiden F1 victory at Estoril in 1985.

The return is expected to provide substantial economic benefits for the Algarve region, boosting tourism and local businesses. Portuguese officials emphasized that hosting the Grand Prix will enhance the country’s international profile while supporting regional development initiatives.

With Formula 1’s calendar remaining at a record 24 races and continuing global demand for hosting rights, Portimão’s addition represents a balance between honoring European racing tradition and accommodating the sport’s expanding worldwide footprint.
