From banging bashers in a Rube Goldberg-like machine to painting a nature scene with your finger, the apps released in 2014 continue to engage kids in new and wondrous ways. Here are my picks for the top new kids’ apps, sorted by category.

• Busy Shapes

Seven Academy, best for ages 2-5, $1.99, iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad

Top app for turning toddlers into thinkers: Busy Shapes is the hip techie counterpart to the traditional shapes sorting toy. While kids will still be putting geometric shapes into the corresponding holes, they will expand their learning 10-fold with its progressive curriculum. In the more than 100 puzzles, preschoolers progress from matching shapes to finding hidden shapes, to using tools and much more.
